CRAZY LOVE
16th Century Madrigals of Love, Lust, and Longing

A virtuoso collection of madrigals and part-songs from 16th-century Europe for four, five and six voices – the first of two programs in our Spring Festival 2013 — recalls the gamut of expression on the topics of love, lust, and longing, as well as gossip, messy break-ups, and — with three excerpts from The Triumphs of Oriana — a glorious homage to Queen Elizabeth I as the grand finale. As an added bonus, three motets written in a 'madrigalian' style comprise the centerpiece of the program, with music by Orlandus Lassus (In hora ultima and Timor et tremor) and Salamone Rossi (Psalm 128). The unmistakeable elegance, wit and charm for which the Renaissance is justly famed casts each of these works in high relief. Thomas Morley, John Wilbye, Michael East, Thomas Weelkes, Claude Le Jeune, Claudio Monteverdi, Lassus, Pierre Certon, Orazio Vecchi, George Kirbye, and George Marson are the featured composers.

KALEIDOSCOPE
Psalms, Hymns & Canticles of the 16th and 17th Centuries

Our Spring Festival 2013 concludes with a program of seven sacred masterworks and two morality madrigals, all for the rare combination of seven voices in all their permutations and combinations. The full palette of ever-changing choral colors is explored — from the darker burnished tones of Le Jeune's chanson and Rossi's Hebrew hymn — to the high-voiced brilliance of Sheppard's Latin hymn and the Magnificat on the seventh tone (subtitled "the very beautiful") by Lassus. Spanning the full vocal spectrum are motets by Tallis, John Tomkins (Thomas's half-brother) and Palestrina, along with the remarkable lovers' dialogue 'to seven voices' by Morley.

GIOVANNI PIERLUIGI DA PALESTRINA | Tu es Petrus a 7
ORLANDUS LASSUS | Magnificat septimi toni 'perpulchrum' a 7 | Psalm 133: Ecce nunc benedicite a 7
JOHN SHEPPARD | Hymn: Beata nobis gaudia a 7
THOMAS TALLIS | Loquebantur variis linguis a 7
JOHN TOMKINS | Psalm 149: Cantate Domino a 7
SALAMONE ROSSI | Hymn: ’Eftach na sefatai a 7
THOMAS MORLEY | Phillis I fain would die now a 7
CLAUDE LE JEUNE | Susanne un jour a 7

PROSPECTIVE SINGERS

All sections are fully staffed for the current season and no auditions are being conducted at this time. Please check back from time to time to see if audition dates have been announced. It is not necessary to inquire individually and there is no waiting list. We are an equal-opportunity employer and contractor, and welcome auditions by highly qualified and experienced professional singers.

USUAL AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for CHAMBER SINGERS (24-voice mixed chorus): Two art songs from any period, one in English and one in a foreign language; range test; graded sight-singing test; soloist capability; music resume; interview. Applicants for CAPPELLA (12 to 18-voice early music ensemble) must also demonstrate knowledge of early music and period vocal style and will be asked to sing a third art song from the Renaissance or Baroque Eras, as well as to sightread a choral selection from those periods. Competition for openings, when available, is extremely high. Openings are very limited. Only the most qualified should consider applying. All applicants will be subject to an initial phone interview; only qualified applicants will be advanced to a sung audition.
