BOLD, FEARLESS, GOOD & FAIR
A Musical History of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy

Philip the Bold (1364-1404), John the Fearless (1404-19), Philip the Good (1419-67), and Charles the Bold (1467-77) comprise the direct lineage of the Valois family dynasty that controlled the ever-changing political and geographic shape of the Duchy of Burgundy — a gift in 1364 of King Charles V ("the Wise"), the elder Philip’s brother. The king’s namesake risked it all in pursuit of more territory and lost both his life and a good deal of land back to the French crown at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. Only the holdings in the Low Countries passed to Charles the Bold’s daughter and only heir, Marie of Burgundy (1477-82), and subsequently to her son, Philip the Fair (1482-1506). Throughout this period, the dukes lavished money and station on a grand music program that set a high watermark for the period and saw some of the boldest and most creative developments in music come to fruition. Preferring the louder wind instruments to the softer strings, the dukes also had a hand in supporting a riot of musical color, even at solemn moments. A varied selection of works by Machaut, Dufay, Josquin and Brumel bring to life this important era in music history.

THE THREE GREAT SERVICES
Magnificats from the Great Services by Parsons, Byrd & Tomkins
highlight an all-English program

The grandeur of the Tudor Age is amply displayed in three brilliant settings of the Canticle of Mary, in Robert Parsons' ground-breaking Great Service written shortly after the first Book of Common Prayer was completed in 1549. Three decades would pass before William Byrd would embark on his own Great Service, written during the first half of the 1580s. Another half century would pass before the last of the great generation of English composers before Purcell, Thomas Tomkins would proffer his own Great Service (c.1630) which is squarely in the Byrd tradition. The program also features a collection of grand motets spanning more than a century, beginning with a remarkably massive work from the Eton Choirbook.

PROSPECTIVE SINGERS

All sections are fully staffed for the current season and no auditions are being conducted at this time. Please check back from time to time to see if audition dates have been announced. It is not necessary to inquire individually and there is no waiting list. We are an equal-opportunity employer and contractor, and welcome auditions by highly qualified and experienced professional singers.

USUAL AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants for CHAMBER SINGERS (24-voice mixed chorus): Two art songs from any period, one in English and one in a foreign language; range test; graded sight-singing test; soloist capability; music resume; interview. Applicants for CAPPELLA (12 to 18-voice early music ensemble) must also demonstrate knowledge of early music and period vocal style and will be asked to sing a third art song from the Renaissance or Baroque Eras, as well as to sightread a choral selection from those periods. Competition for openings, when available, is extremely high. Openings are very limited. Only the most qualified should consider applying. All applicants will be subject to an initial phone interview; only qualified applicants will be advanced to a sung audition.
